A new retreat rises on Santorini’s black sand beaches

This May, a new must-visit property, Istoria, is set to open its doors on the Greek island of Santorini, characterized by its extraordinary juxtaposition of crystalline blue waters and volcanic black sand. Brought to life by the people behind Santorini standouts Mystique and Vedema, both part of  The Luxury Collection, the 12-suite retreat constitutes a new kind of hospitality for the island, where a stripped-down contemporary aesthetic animates a next-generation social hub for sophisticated travelers.

Istoria derives its name from the Ancient Greek word for story, and its design, by Athens-based firm Interior Design Laboratorium, opens a new chapter in the island’s unique architectural narrative, nimbly incorporating the old wooden roofs and stone columns of the original estate, an authentic Santorinian mansion. The island’s abundant natural features appear in volcanic stone, terracotta, natural wood, traditional mosaic in pale tones, and black Santorini sand, all embraced by a verdant natural environment of ancient olive trees, herbs, and aloe.

Far from the tourist-clogged sunset spots of western Santorini, Istoria is located on Perivolos Beach on the island’s paradisiac eastern half where there are still very few high-end accommodations. Here, owners Kalia Konstantinidou and Antonis Eliopoulos, who have called Santorini their home for many years, will help their guests explore the island and discover its alluring secrets.
