Situated firmly in their cultural milieu, Proper Hotels create microcosms for their guests by highlighting the best local talent, be it the arts or culinary. Coming soon, the three new hotels in Downtown L.A., Santa Monica, and Austin have personalities as grand as the storied neighborhoods they reside in. Take Austin Proper Hotel opening in summer 2019—a hub of creativity in Downtown’s vibrant 2nd Street District. Here, the vintage-meets-quirky world of designer Kelly Wearstler’s interiors come together with the culinary creativity of Austin tastemaker McGuire Moorman Hospitality. The award-winning team behind many of the city’s best dining spots will be offering four unique settings for dining and drink. In step with Austin’s natural lifestyle, the sculptural new hotel building has a LEED® Gold certification.
With the twinkling city lights as its backdrop, Downtown L.A. Proper Hotel, opening this fall, reimagines a historic Broadway Corridor landmark into a 148-room hotel. Preserving the building’s colorful history, from a private club in the 1920s—when members included Cecil B. DeMille—to a YWCA in the 1960s, Wearstler layers the vestiges of the past with elements of Spanish, Portuguese, Mexican, and Moroccan design, and has used 100 different kinds of tiles in the process. There are also two destination restaurants led by James Beard Award-winning L.A. chef Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne (Lucques, AOC, Tavern); an intimate library-lounge; and a city-view rooftop pool.
Over in Santa Monica, a vintage landmark building—in the upcoming creative district around 7th and Wilshire—has been elevated with new, contemporary architecture. Here too, renowned local chefs, in this case Jessica Koslow (Sqirl) and Gabriela Camara (Contramar, Cala) will open three restaurant-bar destinations. In a rare collaboration with the celebrated founders of Surya Ayurvedic Spa, the hotel will also offer guests the ultimate in wellness with a state-of-the-art fitness center and yoga terrace. Top that with an unparalleled rooftop pool restaurant and original works by emerging L.A. artists dotting the spaces, and you have an instant new icon on the Westside when it opens in June 2019.
